Whats an ETF

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer instant access to asset classes and investment strategies in a single, diversified, and easily traded pooled fund.

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) let you own a mix of stocks or bonds all at once. They’re like buying a fruit basket rather than picking out each fruit separately. Like mutual funds, they “pool” money from many investors into one fund, giving each investor a share of the entire basket of underlying securities.

ETFs have been available since the early 1990s. They were created because some investors wanted to gain exposure to many securities at once, while also having the flexibility to trade throughout the day on market exchanges where single stocks and bonds also trade.

Here’s a sample menu of choices.

As a result, prospective investors have a limited track record or history on which to base their investment decisions.
